The Energy of letting go

Simple, peaceful room

Fall is a season of transition. The leaves change color, fall from the trees, and make way for something new. It’s a beautiful reminder that letting go is a natural part of life—and sometimes we need to create space before we can welcome what comes next.

This idea feels especially meaningful to me right now.

My husband and I plan to start looking for a new home next spring. We aren’t moving tomorrow, but I’ve realized that preparing for a move doesn’t have to begin with a FOR SALE sign in the yard. For me, it begins now—looking around my home and deciding what I truly want to take into the next chapter of my life.

Over the years, we all accumulate things. Some are useful, some hold wonderful memories, and others simply stay because we haven’t taken the time to decide what to do with them. I’m beginning to ask myself: Do I love this? Do I use it? Does it still mean something to me? And do I want to bring it into my next home?

If the answer is no, perhaps it’s time to let it go.

In Feng Shui, our surroundings affect our energy. When our homes fill up with things we no longer need, use, or love, the energy can start to feel stagnant. Clearing things out can create a wonderful sense of lightness and possibility.

I’m also looking at my home with fresh eyes. Are there little repairs I’ve been putting off? Does something need touching up, organizing, or refreshing? Instead of waiting until we’re ready to sell and suddenly having a long list of things to do, I can begin taking care of them now.

And there’s another benefit: I get to enjoy the results!

So often, we wait until we’re selling a home to make it look its best. We clear the clutter, organize the closets, touch up the paint, and finally tackle those projects we’ve put off. Then we turn around and leave! Why not do some of those things while we’re still living there?

You don’t have to be planning a move to do this. Start with one drawer, one closet, or one small area. Ask yourself what you want to carry forward and what you’re ready to release.

As the trees let go of their leaves this fall, perhaps we can take a cue from nature: let go of what no longer serves you, enjoy the space you’re in today, and make room for the beautiful possibilities ahead.
