Klecker’s Residence

intentional, phased design 2008 & 2017

At Metro Interiors, we believe you don’t have to do a complete overhaul to breathe new life into a space. One of our long-time clients, Janis and Barney Klecker, are a perfect example of how intentional, phased design can transform a home into a true reflection of the people who live in it.

Our journey with the Kleckers began back in 2008, when Janis reached out for help aligning her home’s energy and design. After working with a Feng Shui consultant, she realized she needed a design expert to bring these intentions to life — and that’s where we came in. Together, we created a thoughtful plan that reimagined three rooms, including converting the formal dining room into a more functional and inviting library/sitting area. With a keen eye on color, furniture selection, and energy flow, the result was a cohesive, welcoming environment that the family loved and has enjoyed for years.

Nearly a decade later in 2017, Janis called us again. The ceramic tile flooring throughout their main level was cracking and creating energy blocks. We installed a beautiful, eco-friendly wide plank maple floor with an oil-rubbed matte finish. Locally harvested in Wisconsin, the flooring was not only perfect for Minnesota’s climate but also created a warm, continuous foundation for the next phase of their redesign.

The kitchen came next. As their children began leaving for college, Janis wanted a more serene, adult-friendly space. Gone were the brightly colored ceramic tiles and DIY soundproofing panels. In their place, we added textured wallpaper that’s easy to clean, new window coverings in warm tones to enhance the flooring and wall colors, and a beautiful floral arrangement by our floral designer, Becky, to bring the whole space together. “Metro Interiors is a great company,” Janis shared. “Julie Ann listened to my preferences and needs and was able to transform a portion of my home.”

We also refreshed their guest bedroom — transforming it into a calm, restful space for visitors or family to retreat to. Following a few of Julie Ann’s favorite sleep-friendly design principles, we painted the walls in a soothing tone, removed electronics and clutter, added a solid headboard, and styled the vision wall with personal items like trophies and pottery. “It’s much more peaceful and restful,” Janis said, adding that her son enjoyed the new bed so much, he chose to sleep there before heading off to college.

No detail was overlooked — even the laundry/mud room received a thoughtful refresh. This high-traffic entry point now features stylish porcelain plank tile, soft cream quartz countertops, colorful artwork, a custom-framed self-portrait of their daughter with the family dog, and an upholstered cornice board that pulls the whole look together. “Although a utilitarian space, it’s also where the family mainly enters the home,” Julie Ann shared. “We wanted it to feel welcoming and joyful.”

With every phase, the Kleckers’ home has become more personalized, peaceful, and aligned with their lifestyle. Each space we touched blends beautifully with the rest of the home, telling the story of a family that values both comfort and intention.

Working with the Kleckers for over 15 years has been a joy and an honor. Their home is a testament to how thoughtful design, done in stages, can make a lasting impact — and stand the test of time.
