Every New Chapter Deserves a Fresh Start

As many of you know, I recently got married! It was a joyful and meaningful experience, and as I begin this new chapter of my life, it has reminded me of something I have seen over and over again during my nearly 40 years as an interior designer and Feng Shui consultant:

When our lives change, our homes should evolve with us.

Major life transitions—whether it’s a marriage, welcoming a new family member, becoming an empty nester, retiring, changing careers, or simply deciding you want something different—create an opportunity to refresh not only your mindset but also your surroundings.

Our homes are more than just places where we live. They reflect who we are, where we’ve been, and often, where we’re headed. Sometimes, however, our spaces continue telling an old story long after we’ve outgrown it.

That’s why I encourage my clients to pause during times of transition and ask themselves a few simple questions:

  • Does my home reflect the life I’m living today?
  • Is there anything I’m holding onto that no longer serves me?
  • What changes would help me welcome this new chapter with joy and intention?

The answers don’t always require a complete redesign. Sometimes the most meaningful changes are surprisingly simple.

You might clear a cluttered entryway to welcome new opportunities. Rearrange a room so it functions better for your current lifestyle. Display meaningful artwork that inspires you. Bring fresh plants or flowers into your home to symbolize growth and new beginnings. Or perhaps it’s finally time to let go of furniture or décor that reminds you of a chapter you’ve already finished.

In Feng Shui, every intentional change sends a message. When we thoughtfully care for our surroundings, we also care for ourselves. We create space—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually—for new opportunities, relationships, and experiences to enter our lives.

As I begin this exciting new season, I’m grateful for the reminder that our homes can become powerful partners in helping us move forward with confidence, peace, and purpose.

I hope this encourages you to look around your own home with fresh eyes. Ask yourself: What new chapter am I stepping into, and does my home support the person I’m becoming?

Sometimes the smallest changes can open the door to the biggest transformations.
