From Blank Wall to Beautiful Built-In: A Lower-Level Transformation

When I began working with my clients on their newly built home in the spring of 2024, we started with a vision for every space to be both functional and beautiful. One of the most exciting transformations took place in their lower-level family room—a space meant for gathering, relaxing, and enjoying favorite hobbies.

Originally, the fireplace wall was sleek but minimal, with a large TV mounted above the electric fireplace and open wall space on either side. It was a good starting point, but it lacked the warmth, storage, and personality my clients needed.
The solution? Custom built-in cabinetry that would transform the entire room. I designed a wall of cabinetry to frame the fireplace and TV, adding balance and structure to the room. We included a combination of open shelving for display, closed cabinetry for hidden storage, and, at one end, a cozy built-in bench. The bench wasn’t just for looks; it’s perfectly positioned to pull up to the new table and chairs I sourced and ordered for them.
The cabinetry finish was carefully selected to complement the rest of the home’s palette, tying in with the lower-level bar area and creating a seamless flow. The warm wood tones add depth and coziness, while the built-in design turns the once-blank wall into a true focal point.
One of my favorite parts of this project is how the space now serves my client Jeannine’s lifestyle. She loves doing puzzles, and the new bench-and-table area is already in use exactly as intended.
There’s something deeply satisfying about seeing a design not only look beautiful but function perfectly for the people who live in it.
This project is almost complete—just a few more layers of art, accessories, and lighting to come—but I couldn’t resist sharing this before-and-after moment. It’s a perfect example of how
thoughtful design can elevate a space from “nice” to “loved and lived in.”

Enjoy the “after” photos below! And let me know what you think.
