I’ve been working on several art projects with clients lately, and it has reminded me just how powerful the right art can be in a home.
Art is often thought of as the finishing touch—the piece you add after the furniture, rugs, and lighting are in place. But from a Feng Shui perspective, art is much more than decoration. What you surround yourself with affects the energy of your space and how you feel when you’re in it.
That’s why I encourage my clients to choose art they genuinely connect with. A piece might be beautiful or contain the perfect colors, but how does it make you feel? Does it bring you joy? Inspire you? Create a sense of calm or excitement?
Recently, I worked with a client whose home has a wonderful collection of art and furnishings with both African and Asian influences. We didn’t want everything to match. Instead, we wanted the different cultures, colors, textures, and styles to feel connected.

One of my favorite recent installations is this dramatic grouping along the stairway. We affectionately started calling the colorful wrapped tubes the “oboes.” The mixture of fiber-wrapped sculptural pieces and painted vertical elements creates rhythm, texture, movement, and wonderful visual energy.
The colors also help connect this area to artwork and furnishings seen throughout the rest of the home. Even the colorful artwork visible in the distance becomes part of the story. Your eye travels through the space, creating a sense of flow—which is so important in Feng Shui.
This is something I often tell my clients: Your home doesn’t have to “match,” but it should feel connected.
Art is one of the best ways to create that connection. Color can lead your eye from one area to another. Different shapes and textures can balance the architecture and furnishings. And meaningful pieces can reflect your personality, travels, experiences, and intentions.
When choosing art for your own home, don’t simply ask, “Does this match my sofa?”
Instead, ask yourself:
How does this make me feel?
Does it reflect who I am and what I love?
Does it bring positive energy into my space?
The right art doesn’t just fill an empty wall. It can bring a home to life—and that’s where interior design and Feng Shui come together beautifully.
